Recognizing the Resurrected Jesus

Spring is a time of rebirth. How can people, who observe the new growth that takes place each spring, suppress the truths of scripture and deny the existence of a creator?

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.  (Romans 1:20 NLT)

How can people, in spite of over 500 eyewitnesses, deny the resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Then he (Jesus) appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:6 ESV)

How can two men have a lengthy conversation with the risen Lord and not know who they are talking to?

That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.  While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.  But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.   (Luke 24:13-16 ESV)

People deny the truths of scripture and the resurrection of Jesus Christ because of spiritual blindness and Satan’s deceptions.  Many people genuinely do not understand what the Bible teaches.

What can we do for people like this?

We can pray for them.  We can pray that God will open their eyes and minds to the truths of scripture

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people …  (Ephesians 1:18 NIV)

Pray that God will “open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in (Jesus).’’ (Acts 26:18 ESV)

What two things happened to the two men who were walking and talking with Jesus without recognizing who he was?

First: God opened their eyes.

… their eyes were opened, and they recognized him (Jesus)… (Luke 24:31 ESV)

Second: God (Jesus) opened their minds.

… he (Jesus) opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, … (Luke 24:45 ESV)

Do you have friends who are spiritually blind?  Do you have friends who are living in darkness under the influence of Satan?   You can pray that God  will “open their eyes” and “open their minds to understand the scriptures”.
