God is Speaking. Are You Listening?

How does God speak to us?

Be still and know

God speaks to us:

  • Through His Word

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.              (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT)

  •  Through His Son, Jesus Christ

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. (Hebrews 1:1-2 NLT)

  • Through the Holy Spirit

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. (John 14:26 NLT)

  • Through prayer

“Be still, and know that I am God! (Psalm 46:10 NLT)

  • Through nature and God’s creation

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.
(Psalm 19:1-2)

  •  Through other people

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:19-20 NLT)

  • Through music

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and he turned to me and heard my cry.
                            …
He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what he has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the Lord.
  (Psalm 40:1-3 NLT)

  • Through circumstances

 Example: The plagues in Egypt
So this is what the Lord says: “I will show you that I am the Lord.” Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in my hand, and the river will turn to blood.  (Exodus 7:17 NLT)

  • Through dreams and visions

‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams. (Acts 2:17 NLT)

  • Through miracles

And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles … (Hebrews 2:4 NLT)

  • Through the Sacraments

For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again. (1 Corinthians 11:26 NLT)
