From the deplorable behavior of the Corinthians at the Lord’s supper to the Corinthians receiving and correctly using their unique spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 NLT

Spiritual Gifts
1 Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.
7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 NLT

1 Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. 

  • Special abilities are given to us by the Holy Spirit.

 I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 

  • The special abilities given to us by the Holy Spirit can easily be misunderstood and misused.

Misused or abused.

The Corinthian church was strongly influenced by their surrounding culture and the presence of false teachers.

 

 2 Peter 2:1-2 (NLT)
The Danger of False Teachers
1 But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them. In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. 

  • Paul wanted to encourage and disciple the Corinthians to use their spiritual gifts correctly.
  • Christians need to learn how to use their spiritual gift(s) correctly to bring glory to God. 

3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God (controlled by the Holy Spirit) will curse Jesus,

and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

 It’s all about Jesus.

John 14:6 (NLT)
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

Acts 4:12 (NLT)
There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”

John 3:16 (NLT)
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

1 Timothy 2:5 (NLT)
For,
There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.

John 10:9 (NLT)
Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.

And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”

 Philippians 2:9-11 (NLT)
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor
and gave him the name above all other names,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. 

No one can say from the heart Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

A simple test.

Luke 6:45 (NLT)
45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

Romans 10:9-10 (NLT)
9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

 1 Corinthians 12:3 (ERV)
3 So I tell you that no one who is speaking with the help of God’s Spirit says, “Jesus be cursed.” And no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” without the help of the Holy Spirit.

 What is coming out of your mouth?

  • A simple test to determine what is in your heart: “What is coming out of your mouth?”

 

4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts,

 but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 

 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 

 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

God works in different ways in each of us.

  • Individuals serve the Lord and His Church in various ways.

7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us

Spiritual gifts were given to the Corinthians. 

  • All Christians have at least one spiritual gift.

 so we can help each other.  

  • Spiritual gifts are given to each of us so we can help others and bring glory to God.

8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 

 Various gifts are listed in Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12:28-31, Ephesians 4:11, 1 Peter 4:10-11.

  • We don’t all have the same spiritual gifts. 

11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

  • We do not choose our spiritual gift(s).

The Births of Esau and Jacob

A clear display of God’s sovereignty.

Genesis 25:19-26 (NLT)
The Births of Esau and Jacob
19 This is the account of the family of Isaac, the son of Abraham. 20 When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
21 Isaac pleaded with the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children. The Lord answered Isaac’s prayer, and Rebekah became pregnant with twins. 22 But the two children struggled with each other in her womb. So she went to ask the Lord about it. “Why is this happening to me?” she asked.
23 And the Lord told her, “The sons in your womb will become two nations. From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals. One nation will be stronger than the other; and your older son will serve your younger son.”
24 And when the time came to give birth, Rebekah discovered that she did indeed have twins! 25 The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau. 26 Then the other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob.  Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.

  • Part of God’s sovereign plan was for Isaac to marry Rebekah. (Romans 9:7-12 clearly supports this bullet point.)

Genesis 24:15 (NLT)
Before he had finished praying, he saw a young woman named Rebekah coming out with her water jug on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, who was the son of Abraham’s brother Nahor and his wife, Milcah.

 Near Haran

Terah, Abraham’s father died in Haran.

 21 Isaac pleaded with the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children.

Rebekah was barren for 20 years.

Genesis 25:20 (NLT)
When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah …

Genesis 25:26 (NLT)
…. Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.

  • Isaac’s wife, Rebecca, was barren for twenty years.
  • Unlike Abraham, Isaac pleaded with the Lordon behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children.

Remember the Promise:

Genesis 12:1-2 (NLT)
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.

Genesis 15:3-5 (NLT)
3 You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.”4 Then the Lord said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.” 5 Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”

Genesis 22:17 (NLT)
I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore.

The Pattern:

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. 

Genesis 25:21 (NLT)
Isaac pleaded with the Lord on behalf of his wife (Rebekah), because she was unable to have children.

Genesis 29:31 (NLT)
Jacob’s Many Children
31 When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to have children, but Rachel could not conceive.

  • Sarai, Abram’s wife, Rebekah, Isaac’s wife, and Rachel, Jacob’s wife, were all unable to have children.
  • God’s sovereignty supersedes physical limitations.

The Lord answered Isaac’s prayer, and Rebekah became pregnant with twins. 

 Compare Isaac and Rebekah’s behavior to Abraham and Sarah’s behavior.  Abraham and Sarah tried to work out God’s plan on their own.  Isaac and Rebekah took their concerns to the Lord.

  • The Lord answered Isaac’s prayer and Rebekah became pregnant.

22 But the two children struggled with each other in her womb. So she went to ask the Lord about it.

 Like Isaac, Rebekah took her concerns to the Lord.

 “Why is this happening to me?” she asked.

Hosea 12:3 (NLT)
Even in the womb,
Jacob struggled with his brother;
when he became a man,
he even fought with God.

 Why is this happening? 

  • God chooses people according to his own purposes;he calls people, but not according to their good or bad works.

 Romans 9:7-13 (NLT)
7 Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted,” though Abraham had other children, too.8 This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to be Abraham’s children. 9 For God had promised, “I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
10 This son was our ancestor Isaac. When he married Rebekah, she gave birth to twins. 11 But before they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, she received a message from God. (This message shows that God chooses people according to his own purposes; 12 he calls people, but not according to their good or bad works.) She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger son.” 13 In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau.” 

  • God sets individuals apart and appoints them to specific callings.

Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NLT)
4 The Lord gave me (Jeremiah) this message:
5 “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.
Before you were born I set you apart
and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”

 Galatians 1:15-16 (NLT)
15 But even before I (Paul) was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him 16 to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles.

Ephesians 1:4 (NLT)
4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

Psalm 139:16 (NLT)
16 You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed. 

  • God’s plans began in eternity past and will be accomplished and completed in eternity future. (Human understanding cannot accurately capture this thought.)

23 And the Lord told her, “The sons in your womb will become two nations. From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals.

 Israelites vs. Edomites

 One nation will be stronger than the other; and your older son will serve your younger son.”

The older serving the younger was not the natural order.

God decides when nations rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

Acts 17:26 (NLT)
From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

Psalm 22:27-28 (NLT)
27 The whole earth will acknowledge the Lord and return to him.
All the families of the nations will bow down before him.
28 For royal power belongs to the Lord.
He rules all the nations.

Job 12:23 (NLT)
He builds up nations, and he destroys them.
He expands nations, and he abandons them.

Psalm 66:7 (NLT)
For by his great power he rules forever.
He watches every movement of the nations;
let no rebel rise in defiance. 

  • Power belongs to the Lord. He rules all the nations.
  • God’s sovereignty supersedes tradition and culture. 

24 And when the time came to give birth, Rebekah discovered that she did indeed have twins! 25 The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau.

Order at the Lord’s Supper

1 Corinthians 11:17-34 NLT

Order at the Lord’s Supper
17 But in the following instructions, I cannot praise you. For it sounds as if more harm than good is done when you meet together. 18 First, I hear that there are divisions among you when you meet as a church, and to some extent I believe it. 19 But, of course, there must be divisions among you so that you who have God’s approval will be recognized!
20 When you meet together, you are not really interested in the Lord’s Supper. 21 For some of you hurry to eat your own meal without sharing with others. As a result, some go hungry while others get drunk.22 What? Don’t you have your own homes for eating and drinking? Or do you really want to disgrace God’s church and shame the poor? What am I supposed to say? Do you want me to praise you? Well, I certainly will not praise you for this!
23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.”26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
27 So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.28 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. 29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.
31 But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. 32 Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
33 So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the Lord’s Supper, wait for each other. 34 If you are really hungry, eat at home so you won’t bring judgment upon yourselves when you meet together. I’ll give you instructions about the other matters after I arrive.

 Examine the scriptures:

The Corinthian Church was having a great deal of difficulty doing communion right.

17 But in the following instructions, I cannot praise you.

 Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)
No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

 Proverbs 13:24 (NLT)
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children.
Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 

  • Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

 For it sounds as if more harm than good is done when you meet together. 

 What is communion?

Communion

At Corinth, an experience meant to build up the church was having the opposite effect.  This was not o.k.

Paul needed to address some serious abuses in worship.

18 First, I hear that there are divisions among you when you meet as a church, and to some extent I believe it. 

The church was divided at a celebration which was meant to express unity.

Paul appealed for unity in the Corinthian Church.

1 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT)
Divisions in the Church
10 I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

 1 Corinthians 3:3 (NLT)
… for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? 

  • The division in the Corinthian Church carried over into their participation of the Lord’s Supper.

 

19 But, of course, there must be divisions among you so that you who have God’s approval will be recognized!

Divisions:
to make it clear who is genuine. CEB
to show who the real believers are! ERV
they who are genuine and of approved fitness may become evident and plainly recognized among you. AMPC
to show which of you have God’s approval. NIV
in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. ESV

  • Genuine believers should be easily identifiable as Children of God.

Matthew 7:16 (NLT)
You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act.

 Abuses in the Corinthian Church communion services.

 20 When you meet together, you are not really interested in the Lord’s Supper.

 Instead of celebrating communion, church members were feasting and drinking.

  21 For some of you hurry to eat your own meal without sharing with others. As a result, some go hungry while others get drunk.

 Some individuals were eating meals and getting drunk while others were going hungry.

 22 What? Don’t you have your own homes for eating and drinking? Or do you really want to disgrace God’s church and shame the poor? What am I supposed to say? Do you want me to praise you? Well, I certainly will not praise you for this! 

  • The Corinthian Church was disgracing God’s church and shaming the poor by the way they did communion.

 Communion, a very sacred event.

 23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.”26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again. 

  • Communion is a reminder of the sacrifice of the LORD Jesus Christ.

 27 So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

 Christians need to take communion seriously.

  • Anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

 28 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.  

  • Believers should examine themselves, their heart, mind, and motives, before taking communion.

 29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. 

 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.

  • Violating the Lord’s Supper has serious consequences.

Sin has serious consequences.

Psalm 32:1-5 (NLT)
A psalm of David.
1 Oh, what joy for those
whose disobedience is forgiven,
whose sin is put out of sight!
2 Yes, what joy for those
whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt,
whose lives are lived in complete honesty!
3 When I refused to confess my sin,
my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
4 Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat.
5 Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. 

 31 But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. 

1 John 1:9 (NLT)
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

 32 Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world. 

  • The deplorable behavior of the Corinthians did not cost them their salvation.

 33 So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the Lord’s Supper, wait for each other. 34 If you are really hungry, eat at home so you won’t bring judgment upon yourselves when you meet together. I’ll give you instructions about the other matters after I arrive.

The Death of Abraham

Genesis 25:1-18 (NLT)
1 Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s descendants were the Asshurites, Letushites, and Leummites. 4 Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. These were all descendants of Abraham through Keturah.
5 Abraham gave everything he owned to his son Isaac. 6 But before he died, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them off to a land in the east, away from Isaac.
7 Abraham lived for 175 years, 8 and he died at a ripe old age, having lived a long and satisfying life. He breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. 10 This was the field Abraham had purchased from the Hittites and where he had buried his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who settled near Beer-lahai-roi in the Negev.
Ishmael’s Descendants
12 This is the account of the family of Ishmael, the son of Abraham through Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian servant. 13 Here is a list, by their names and clans, of Ishmael’s descendants: The oldest was Nebaioth, followed by Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These twelve sons of Ishmael became the founders of twelve tribes named after them, listed according to the places they settled and camped. 17 Ishmael lived for 137 years. Then he breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death. 18 Ishmael’s descendants occupied the region from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt in the direction of Asshur. There they lived in open hostility toward all their relatives.

 1 Chronicles 1:32-33 (NLT)
32 The sons of Keturah, Abraham’s concubine, were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
The sons of Jokshan were Sheba and Dedan.
33 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.
All these were descendants of Abraham through his concubine Keturah.

When Moses fled the wrath of Pharaoh, he traveled to Midian (Exodus 2:15). There, Moses met and married his wife, Zipporah, and served his father-in-law, Jethro, as a shepherd for forty years.

The Midianites were the descendants of Midian and therefore children of Abraham. They settled in “the land of the east” (Genesis 25:6). Most scholars believe the land of Midian was officially on both sides of the Gulf of Aqaba, although the Midianites showed nomadic tendencies later in their history. 

  • Abraham’s genealogy includes six sons through his wife (concubine) Keturah.

A concubine has a lower status than a wife.

5 Abraham gave everything he owned to his son Isaac. 

  • Isaac was the rightful heir of Abraham’s estate.

More importantly:

The promise (God’s covenant) was first made to Abraham (Genesis 15:18-21), then confirmed to his son Isaac (Genesis 26:3), and then to Isaac’s son Jacob (Genesis 28:13), Abraham’s grandson.

Genesis 17: 21 (NLT)
21 … my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac, who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year.”

 Genesis 26:2-4  (NLT)
2 The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt, but do as I tell you. 3 Live here as a foreigner in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I hereby confirm that I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father. 4 I will cause your descendants to become as numerous as the stars of the sky, and I will give them all these lands. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed. 

  • God’s covenant with Abraham was confirmed with Isaac.

Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines, but these sons were never considered to be Israelites, or God’s chosen people.

  • The sons of Abraham’s concubines were not considered a part of the Jewish nation.

7 Abraham lived for 175 years, 8 and he died at a ripe old age, having lived a long and satisfying life. He breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death.

  • Isaac and Ishmael reunited to bury their father.

 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who settled near Beer-lahai-roi in the Negev.

 The torch (God’s blessing) was passed on to Isaac.

20 As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.21 But my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac, who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year.”

12 This is the account of the family of Ishmael, the son of Abraham through Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian servant. 13 Here is a list, by their names and clans, of Ishmael’s descendants: The oldest was Nebaioth, followed by Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These twelve sons of Ishmael became the founders of twelve tribes named after them, listed according to the places they settled and camped.  

  • God also blessed Ishmael with numerous descendants. 

17 Ishmael lived for 137 years. Then he breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death. 18 Ishmael’s descendants occupied the region from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt in the direction of Asshur.

 There they lived in open hostility toward all their relatives.

In Biblical times, there were certain nations who were specifically identified as the descendants of Keturah, such as the nation of Midian. Today, however, the children of Keturah have more or less assimilated in with the children of Ishmael.

Paul was addressing the “Everything is permissible”,   we can dress and do as we please mentality.

Begin with verse 16.

16 But if anyone wants to argue about this, I simply say that we have no other custom than this, and neither do God’s other churches. 

  • Paul based many of his comments on common customs in the churches and in the culture. 

 4 A man dishonors his head if he covers his head while praying or prophesying. 

Praying according to pagan customs.

Roman men sometimes covered their heads while worshipping pagan gods.

Out of respect to Christ (God), a man prayed with his head uncovered.

Or

This signifies a different role for men than for women.

5 But a woman dishonors her head if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head,

The preponderance of evidence points toward the public head covering of women as the universal custom in the first century in both the Jewish culture and the Greco-Roman culture.

A symbol of a subordinate relationship to her husband.

In the first century Roman society, the woman’s head covering was a sign of marriage.

Today women wear rings to show that they are married.

A married woman praying with her head uncovered was a sign of loose morals.

For this is the same as shaving her head. 

  • In the first century in both the Jewish culture and the Greco-Roman culture it was a disgrace for a woman to pray in public without covering her head.

6 Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair!

 In that culture, only a prostitute or feminist would shave her head.

 But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering.

  • Corinthian women showed respect for and submission to their husband by covering their heads during public worship.

 7 A man should not wear anything on his head when worshiping, for man is made in God’s image and reflects God’s glory. And woman reflects man’s glory. 8 For the first man didn’t come from woman, but the first woman came from man. 9 And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man.  

  • The roles of men and women differ.

  • Simple interpretation. A man should not try to look like a girl and a woman should not try to look like a boy.

I simply say that we have no other custom than this.

Throwing off the head covering was an act of insubordination.

Maintain their distinctive feminine hairdos.

When custom dictated, women should wear a head covering.

55 “But we want Rebekah to stay with us at least ten days,” her brother and mother said. “Then she can go.”
56 But he said, “Don’t delay me. The Lord has made my mission successful; now send me back so I can return to my master.”
57 “Well,” they said, “we’ll call Rebekah and ask her what she thinks.”58 So they called Rebekah. “Are you willing to go with this man?” they asked her

59 So they said good-bye to Rebekah and sent her away with Abraham’s servant and his men. The woman who had been Rebekah’s childhood nurse went along with her. 60 They gave her this blessing as she parted:

the mother of many millions!

And he replied, “It is my master.” So Rebekah covered her face with her veil. 66 Then the servant told Isaac everything he had done.

  • Presenting expensive presents to Laban and Bethuel finalized these arrangements.

 54 Then they ate their meal, and the servant and the men with him stayed there overnight.

 But early the next morning, Abraham’s servant said, “Send me back to my master.”

 As before, Abraham’s servant wanted to get right down to business.

His mission was successful. (As a servant he had to be “dismissed”.)

 33 Then food was served. But Abraham’s servant said, “I don’t want to eat until I have told you why I have come.”

55 “But we want Rebekah to stay with us at least ten days,” her brother and mother said. “Then she can go.”

Time to prepare for the departure. (a reasonable request.)

 56 But he said, “Don’t delay me. The Lord has made my mission successful;

 “The Lord has made my mission successful.”

Abraham’s servant introduced to Laban

Genesis 24:28-49 (NLT)
28 The young woman ran home to tell her family everything that had happened. 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, who ran out to meet the man at the spring. 30 He had seen the nose-ring and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man had said. So he rushed out to the spring, where the man was still standing beside his camels. 31 Laban said to him, “Come and stay with us, you who are blessed by the Lord! Why are you standing here outside the town when I have a room all ready for you and a place prepared for the camels?”
32 So the man went home with Laban, and Laban unloaded the camels, gave him straw for their bedding, fed them, and provided water for the man and the camel drivers to wash their feet. 33 Then food was served. But Abraham’s servant said, “I don’t want to eat until I have told you why I have come.”“All right,” Laban said, “tell us.”
34 “I am Abraham’s servant,” he explained. 35 “And the Lord has greatly blessed my master; he has become a wealthy man. The Lord has given him flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, a fortune in silver and gold, and many male and female servants and camels and donkeys.
36 “When Sarah, my master’s wife, was very old, she gave birth to my master’s son, and my master has given him everything he owns. 37 And my master made me take an oath. He said, ‘Do not allow my son to marry one of these local Canaanite women. 38 Go instead to my father’s house, to my relatives, and find a wife there for my son.’
39 “But I said to my master, ‘What if I can’t find a young woman who is willing to go back with me?’ 40 He responded, ‘The Lord, in whose presence I have lived, will send his angel with you and will make your mission successful. Yes, you must find a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father’s family. 41 Then you will have fulfilled your obligation. But if you go to my relatives and they refuse to let her go with you, you will be free from my oath.’
42 “So today when I came to the spring, I prayed this prayer: ‘O Lord, God of my master, Abraham, please give me success on this mission.43 See, I am standing here beside this spring. This is my request. When a young woman comes to draw water, I will say to her, “Please give me a little drink of water from your jug.” 44 If she says, “Yes, have a drink, and I will draw water for your camels, too,” let her be the one you have selected to be the wife of my master’s son.’
45 “Before I had finished praying in my heart, I saw Rebekah coming out with her water jug on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’ 46 She quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, ‘Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!’ So I drank, and then she watered the camels.
47 “Then I asked, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel, and my grandparents are Nahor and Milcah.’ So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.
48 “Then I bowed low and worshiped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master, Abraham, because he had led me straight to my master’s niece to be his son’s wife. 49 So tell me—will you or won’t you show unfailing love and faithfulness to my master? Please tell me yes or no, and then I’ll know what to do next.”

Laban served as the grown spokesman for his father Bethuel’s house.

Laban played a key part in arranging the marriage of Isaac and Rebekah.

50 Then Laban and Bethuel replied, “The Lord has obviously brought you here, so there is nothing we can say. 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go. Yes, let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.”

 52 When Abraham’s servant heard their answer, he bowed down to the ground and worshiped the Lord. 53 Then he brought out silver and gold jewelry and clothing and presented them to Rebekah. He also gave expensive presents to her brother and mother. 

 54 Then they ate their meal, and the servant and the men with him stayed there overnight.
But early the next morning, Abraham’s servant said, “Send me back to my master.”
55 “But we want Rebekah to stay with us at least ten days,” her brother and mother said. “Then she can go.”

Laban was impressed by the gold jewelry given to his sister on behalf of Isaac.

27 If someone who isn’t a believer asks you home for dinner, accept the invitation if you want to. Eat whatever is offered to you without raising questions of conscience. 28 (But suppose someone tells you, “This meat was offered to an idol.” Don’t eat it, out of consideration for the conscience of the one who told you. 29 It might not be a matter of conscience for you, but it is for the other person.) For why should my freedom be limited by what someone else thinks? 30 If I can thank God for the food and enjoy it, why should I be condemned for eating it?

 Be careful not to misinterpret John 8:36.

 This is not saying “Now I can do anything I want to do.”

The Corinthian Christians had (and believed) a saying, “I am allowed to do anything.”

 The Corinthians were misinterpreting their “freedom”.

  • The Corinthian Christians were free to eat any meat that was sold in the marketplace.

10 Then he loaded ten of Abraham’s camels with all kinds of expensive gifts from his master, and he traveled to distant Aram-naharaim. There he went to the town where Abraham’s brother Nahor had settled. 11 He made the camels kneel beside a well just outside the town. It was evening, and the women were coming out to draw water.
12 “O Lord, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham. 13 See, I am standing here beside this spring, and the young women of the town are coming out to draw water. 14 This is my request. I will ask one of them, ‘Please give me a drink from your jug.’ If she says, ‘Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!’—let her be the one you have selected as Isaac’s wife. 21 The servant watched her in silence, wondering whether or not the Lord had given him success in his mission. 22 Then at last, when the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring for her nose and two large gold bracelets for her wrists.

36 Then Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, 37 prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.” 38 And that is just what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out a whole bowlful of water.
39 Then Gideon said to God, “Please don’t be angry with me, but let me make one more request. Let me use the fleece for one more test. This time let the fleece remain dry while the ground around it is wet with dew.” 40 So that night God did as Gideon asked. The fleece was dry in the morning, but the ground was covered with dew.

 21 The servant watched her in silence, wondering whether or not the Lord had given him success in his mission. 22 Then at last, when the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring for her nose and two large gold bracelets for her wrists. 

  • Abraham’s servant was patient. (It would have taken a long time to water the ten camels.)

 23 “Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “And please tell me, would your father have any room to put us up for the night?”

 24 “I am the daughter of Bethuel,” she replied. “My grandparents are Nahor and Milcah. 25 Yes, we have plenty of straw and feed for the camels, and we have room for guests.”
